AUSTRALIA
The “land down under” is arguably one of the friendliest places the traveling sportsman can visit. Australians have long been renowned for their laid-back, easy-going style and warm hospitality. Traveling in Australia is simply a lot of fun! It is a great destination, not only for the hunting, but also for the pristine beaches and World Heritage sites like the Great Barrier Reef and Uluru.
The Commonwealth of Australia is an island-continent in the South Pacific, about two thirds the size of the United States, with half the population of California and abundant natural resources. It leads the world in the production of wool and boasts the highest standard of living in the region. The infrastructure is good and tourism is a major industry with the beautiful beaches of the Gold Coast near Brisbane and the Great Barrier reef as primary attractions.
There are two major ecological zones for hunting, the “Top End” and the coastal region of Queensland and Victoria. At the Top End, in the jungles of Cobourg Peninsula the coveted banteng is hunted. Slightly further south in the Eucalyptus forests and huge swamps of aboriginal Arnhem Land and the surrounding ranch land of the Northern Territory, feral water buffalo and wild boar are numerous, as are feral goats and other domestic stock run wild. The huge ranches, known as “stations” in Australia, are measure in sections (square miles) rather than in acres.
In Queensland, game ranching has become a fine art and several deer species including red deer, Javan Rusa deer, Axis deer and Sambar. Various other introduced species are found further south in Victoria and in New South Wales.
As for indigenous game, Australia has no native large mammals, but hunting for kangaroo, dingo and rabbits is available over most of the country.
A visit to the Great Barrier Reed is a popular adjunct to hunts in Australia. Skin diving, snorkeling or big game fishing are excellent at this world famous spot.
